Paper Mill Road over Sope Creek

Paper Mill Road over Sope Creek

This design-bid-build project was for a bridge replacement in Marietta, Georgia. The contract value was $2,154,000 and the job was completed in 2014. The new, 126 ft long bridge replaced an old load rated and structurally deficient bridge on a major thoroughfare in Cobb County. Construction of the project was required to be done during the 3 months that schools were closed in the summer.

The bridge is located in a National Park and received a custom form liner finish to allow the structure to blend in with the natural surroundings. It was selected as the winner of the 2014 Portland Cement Association’s Concrete Bridge Award competition for the simple span category.

The work included construction of a single span bridge supported by driven pile foundations on the west side and a spread footing embedded into solid rock on the east side. The single span was supported by AASHTO Bulb Tee girders and a poured in place concrete deck. This project also included utility relocation work, landscaping, bridge removal, concrete flatwork, and asphalt paving.
